Kilimahewa Modern Secondary School had the privilege of hosting Akili Chanya Initiative Tanzania for a seminar centered on child rights and abuse prevention, marking an important step in our commitment to student welfare and empowerment. The seminar, attended by 150 pre-form one students, focused on equipping our young learners with essential knowledge about their rights, as well as strategies to prevent and respond to various forms of abuse.
The Akili Chanya team opened the session by discussing the core concept of child rights, emphasizing every studentβs right to feel safe, respected, and supported. They explained that understanding these rights forms a foundation for identifying harmful situations, promoting self-respect, and empowering students to stand up for themselves and others.
Throughout the seminar, students were educated on the different types of child abuse, with particular attention to sexual, physical, and mental/psychological abuse. The Akili Chanya staff facilitated insightful discussions about these abuses, offering students clear examples and outlining potential indicators of each type. This knowledge was crucial in helping students understand the impact of abuse, both on themselves and on their peers, and helped foster a safe space for open questions and honest conversations.
Empowerment and practical action were focal points of the session. Akili Chanya staff guided students on how to say “No” assertively in situations that feel uncomfortable or unsafe, and emphasized that each of them has a voice and a choice in all interactions. Through interactive role-play, students were able to practice and reinforce these vital life skills, building confidence and resilience.
Students were also provided with a detailed guide on how to seek help and report any abuse they might encounter. Akili Chanya stressed the importance of identifying trusted adultsβteachers, family members, school counselorsβwho are there to provide support and take action. Our students were given valuable information on community resources and helplines available to them, assuring them that they are not alone and that help is always accessible.
Kilimahewa Modern Secondary School is grateful to Akili Chanya Initiative Tanzania for delivering this vital program to our students. This seminar not only raised awareness about child rights but also reinforced the importance of creating a supportive and safe environment for our young learners. We believe that these lessons will empower our students to protect themselves and each other, creating a positive and protective school culture.
As part of our ongoing partnership with Akili Chanya, we look forward to hosting more events like this that address the unique challenges our students face. Together, we are committed to fostering an environment where every student feels valued, safe, and empowered.
